Although exacerbat ions become more frequent and more severe as COPD progresses,
the rate at which they occur appears to ref lect an independent susceptibility pheno-
type. This has implications for the targeting of exacerbation-prevention strategies
across the spectrum of disease severity.

 

severe stage 에서도 약 29% 는 급성악화에 대한 저항성을 가지고 있어서  이 경우에 급성악화에 대한 예방을 위한 aggressive intervention 이 필요하지 않을지도 모른다.  급성악화에 취약한 군과 구별지을 만한 다른 특징이 a history of exacerbations 말고는 없었다.
